British Trifle Recipe

A Red, White & Blue Trifle for the 4th of July – with a British Twist 🇬🇧🇺🇸

It might not be a British holiday, but we’re always happy to join the celebration — especially if it involves good food and a sunny day. This Red, White & Blue Trifle is the perfect way to bring a little British flair to your 4th of July table.

Layered with fruit, custard, sponge, and cream, it’s a proper showstopper that feels festive, nostalgic, and just a bit refined (without being fussy).

Ingredients:

  • 1 Swiss roll, pack of lady fingers or Victoria sponge, sliced

  • 1 punnet fresh strawberries, halved

  • 1 punnet fresh blueberries

  • 1 packet raspberry or strawberry Jelly (Jello)

  • 1 pint custard (Bird’s is best)

  • 1 pint double cream, whipped

  • Optional: a splash of sherry

  • Toppings: extra berries, crushed meringue, or sprinkles

How to Make It:

  1. Layer the sponge slices at the bottom of a glass bowl or trifle dish. Add a little sherry if you're feeling fancy.

  2. Add a mix of strawberries and blueberries.

  3. Prepare your jelly and pour it over the fruit and sponge. Chill until fully set (about 2–3 hours).

  4. Spoon over the custard and allow to set

  5. Top with a generous layer of whipped cream.

  6. Decorate with berries, crushed meringue, or anything red, white, and blue.

  7. Chill until ready to serve — best enjoyed cold on a warm day.

If you have time you could layer the dessert like the photo, you'll just need to plan a day or two ahead!

Why It’s Great for the 4th

It’s easy to make, serves a crowd, and brings together the colours of the season in a dessert that’s a bit different — and totally delicious. Whether you’re British, American, or just here for the pudding, this trifle is a celebration on a spoon.
