McVitie’s Milk Chocolate Digestives are one of those biscuits that need almost no introduction if you grew up in Britain.

We’re not generally allowed to eat the stock. Especially not the stuff we don’t have enough of. But one pack recently got a bit too warm because someone left it somewhere they absolutely shouldn’t have, and suddenly the rules became rather more flexible.

That packet disappeared in seconds.

And honestly, they were every bit as good as I remembered. Maybe better, which is suspicious because almost nothing gets better with age and I’m fairly sure that includes us.

The formula is absurdly simple: that unmistakable crumbly, wheaty McVitie’s Digestive base, topped with a layer of smooth milk chocolate. Somehow the balance is perfect. Not too sweet, properly substantial, excellent with tea, and dangerously easy to keep reaching for.

Everyone British already knows these. Everyone else ought to.
