Bassetts Jelly Babies

Jelly Babies are one of those sweets where everyone has a ranking.

Purple first, obviously. Then red. Then probably black. After that it gets more negotiable, until eventually you’re left with whatever colour everyone else has been strategically avoiding.

That is also why sharing a bag is such a dangerous social experiment.

And then there’s the texture, which is honestly half the point. Soft, but not squishy. Firm, but not chewy. Slightly powdery on the outside, yielding in the middle, and somehow completely unlike almost every other sweet.

Apparently they come in strawberry, lemon, raspberry, lime, blackcurrant and orange flavours, and the real skill is pretending not to care which colour you get while quietly tracking every purple one in the bag.
